The 27 year old Mariam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag from Sudan who is pregnant with a child has just been sentenced to death by hanging by a Sudanese court for apostasy, (that is, denouncing ones faith or religion) after marrying a Christian man.
Mariam, whose father is Muslim but raised as an orthodox Christian by her mother, was earlier sentenced to death by hanging on Sunday, May 11th, but was given till yesterday, May 15th, to have a rethink and convert back to Islam before the verdict would be enforced.
However during a court appearance yesterday, Mariam maintained that she's a Christian and there's no going back.
"We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged to death." Judge Abbas Mohammed Al-Khalifa told the woman in court today, AFP reports
"I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy," Mariam replied the court.

"It's not only Sudan. In Saudi Arabia, in all the Muslim countries, it is not allowed at all for a Muslim to change his/her religion." he told AFP
Since, the death sentence will be carried out after Mariam gives birth, let's pray for our dear sister that God will deliver her from the hands of death even before she deliver her baby.
It's not the will of God that Tessy Nkennor's blog be used to speak against any religion, but their are some questions the Muslims really need to ask themselves.
Must everything leads to death, killing and slaughtering? Is there no place of mercy in your religion? Is it by force to remain in a religion that encourage killing each other? Where is the love you claim to have? What if other religion decides to start killing anyone that turn to Muslim?
How do you think Mariam's child will feel about your religion when he grow up to discover that the religion he love so much ordered her mother's death?
What will Mariam's parent feel about watching their daughter's untimely death? No matter how loyal a man is to his faith, seeing his daughter killed by that religion has a way of killing a man, especially the mother.
Finally, there is nothing as painful as watching your own child being killed when you are still alive. A man will give his life to save his child, but in this case, he feels helpless to save his daughter.
The God that delivered Daniel from the lion's den will deliver Mariam from this very snares of the enemy. Can I hear you say Amen to that?

Religion of peace indeed. Is it by force to be a Muslim? If it's a Christian that converted,they'll celebrate. They should allow her freedom of religion joor! Moreover, I read the details of the story elsewhwere,she was brought up by her Christian mum after her Muslim dad abandoned them only for him to resurface when she's all grown and married to a Christian and wants to lay claim to her. It's a shame.

But this is becoming unbearable and something must be done by international bodies. Why killing someone because she discover your religion does not pay her agaain. Do pple have to remain in ur religion for fear of being killed.
I think there re some intenational bodies that specialise in this sort of thing, but they cannot just enter Sudan and start making demands. Its complicated. only God intervention can free Mariam as it is.
