felt it was in the best interest of those in her congregation for her to resign as Detroit is considered to have a fairly conservative religious theology.
She stated to NewsOne that she felt like it was important that she not be dishonest about her sexuality and that being honest about it was part of staying true to her Christian upbringing which taught her to always be truthful.
Abrams received mixed responses from the announcement with some supporting her and others feeling as though she should not be allowed to be part of the church due to her sexuality. Rev. Charles G. Adams, who pastors a church in Detroit and is also a close friend of Abrams, felt that some in the city focused too much on Abrams sexuality and that the interpretation of biblical text regarding homosexuality is a complex one. Abrams feels that she will be able to pastor the new congregation with the kind of ministry that she feels she has been called to do. Same sex marriage is legal in Maryland, and the theological climate is much more open. Abrams is appreciative that she will be able to serve in a region where many members of the LGBT community have been shamed into not being part of the church.
Abrams is currently using space at the Episcopal Anglican Church of the Ascension until she can find a more permanent home for her congregation, and her interaction with other ministers in the area seems positive and promising.
